William “Billy” Connolly, CBE, is a comedian, musician, presenter, and actor. He is sometimes known, especially in his native Scotland, by the nickname “The Big Yin” (The Big One), a reference to his height. Any male visitor to Glasgow above average height may be addressed as “Big Yin” by the locals; Billy, however, is The Big Yin. An early irreverent sketch, The Crucifixion, is an example of his often controversial humour, and his style, in story and song, is known for being somewhat vulgar, and for being very critical towards respected institutions.

Directed by Amon Miyamoto, a new production of this much-loved musical will invigorate and illuminate the show with fresh visual, emotional and musical energy. Designer Rumi Matsui joins Miyamoto on The Fantasticks following their previous collaboration on the Broadway production of Pacific Overtures for which Matsui’s work was Tony Award nominated. Lighting design will be provided by 2009 Tony Award winner Rick Fisher.

The Fantasticks tells an allegorical story, loosely based on the play The Romancers (Les Romanesques) by Edmond Rostand, concerning two neighboring fathers who put up a wall between their houses to ensure that their children fall in love, because they know children always do what their parents forbid. After the children do fall in love, they discover their fathers' plot and each goes off and experience the world. Finally they return to each other and the love they had, having learned from the world to recognize their true feelings. Elements of the musical are drawn from the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, its story winding its way through Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream as well as Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore and Rostand's play. Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt’s classic score features titles including Much More, I Can See It and the instantly familiar Try To Remember.

The Fantasticks first played in New York nearly fifty years ago and has since become the longest running show of any kind in the United States and the longest running musical in the world. It has played in over 2000 cities and towns in the States, and internationally, it has been staged in 67 countries.
Now, due to popular demand, and having been seen by over 60,000 people, the production extends its run and transfers to the Wyndham’s Theatre on 3 December for sixteen weeks.
Public Booking opens at 10am on Thursday 5 November 2009.
Stephen Daldry returned to direct the revival with a cast featuring Nicholas Woodeson as Inspector Goole, David Roper as Arthur Birling, Sandra Duncan as Sybil Birling, Marianne Oldham as Sheila Birling, Robin Whiting as Eric Birling and Timothy Watson as Gerald Croft.
Following its initial success at the National Theatre, Stephen Daldry’s production of An Inspector Calls transferred to the West End for two years, prior to a world tour. In 1993 the production opened on Broadway, winning an unprecedented string of awards including four Tony Awards. Winning a total of 19 major awards since it first opened, this landmark production has played in Australia, the United States, Japan and Europe, and as well as its first West End run, has completed six major UK tours and a return visit to the West End which lasted for over eight years. Well in excess of 2 million theatergoers have watched the production at nearly 5000 performances.
World-renowned as one of Britain’s leading theatre and film directors, Stephen Daldry has been back in the spotlight as his latest film The Reader won numerous award nominations and its star Kate Winslet picked up both the Oscar and the BAFTA for Best Actress. Since then,
Daldry’s hugely popular stage musical Billy Elliot has been nominated for a staggering 15 awards. When An Inspector Calls opened at the National Theatre in 1992 to universal acclaim it was awarded three Olivier Awards, two Evening Standard Awards and was hailed as the definitive production.
Written at the end of the Second World War and set before the First, An Inspector Calls is a compelling and haunting thriller. The story begins when the mysterious Inspector Goole calls unexpectedly on the prosperous Birling family home. Their peaceful family dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman.
'Did any stage revival in the Nineties take more risks, cause more jaws to drop or do more to shake people awake to the transformative power of theatre than Stephen Daldry’s radical re-visioning of J B Priestley’s An Inspector Calls?’

Alceste is a work of high quality, the mature creation of a great musical dramatist, but for reasons which remain obscure, the production planned for Covent Garden Theatre was cancelled and the music was never performed in the context for which it had been designed.

Alceste is clearly theatrical music and demands stage presentation. The first ever performance was given by the English Bach Festival at the Banqueting House on the 13th of June 1984, then the following day at the Opéra Royal, Château de Versailles, and later recreated at the Linbury Studio, Covent Garden, to bring the music for the first time to the location, if not the actual theatre, for which it was composed.
Production by Tom Hawkes
Choreography by Sarah Cremer
Costumes by Terence Emery
'The style and quality of performance are just the reminders needed of the special place this dauntless enterprise still holds in our musical life....' - Max Loppert Financial Times
'The dance event of the month....' - Nicholas Dromgoole' Sunday Telegraph
Pioneers since 1977 as 'guest company' at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the English Bach Festival breathes life to the operas of Purcell, Handel, Lully, Rameau, Gluck and presents them with magnificent costumes, elegant dance and the period instruments for which they were written. It has given the opportunity to see great works outside the usual repertoire, many of them for the first time at the Opera House, including some premieres in our time.

Tickets from HMV Tickets<dcterms:modified>2009-11-20T17:07:21-00:00</dcterms:modified><geo:lat>51.50452485</geo:lat><geo:long>-0.12580309</geo:long><geourl:latitude>51.50452485</geourl:latitude><geourl:longitude>-0.12580309</geourl:longitude><icbm:latitude>51.50452485</icbm:latitude><icbm:longitude>-0.12580309</icbm:longitude>

Marilyn & Ella Theater Tickets, Apollo Theatre, London

Following its sell-out success critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival in 2006 and a similarly rapturous reception during its London première at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in 2008, Marilyn & Ella arrives at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue in the West End for a strictly limited run of Sundays.
